Original Plans of the Wilts & Berks Canal

In association with the Swindon & Wiltshire History Centre these pages are low resolution images of the pages from the Wilts & Berks Canal Company Maps of the mainline of the canal. The map book is available to view at the Centre in Chippenham reference 2424/46 -please go the the Swindon & Wiltshire History Centre web site to find out how to view this and other information.

In looking at the pages please remember that they show the area at the time (circa 1810)  without many of the features of  more modern maps (road and railways). The plans only seem to indicate some of the branches, and pre-date the North Wilts Canal

The original pages  have been  annotated   and shaded to indicate the sale of the canal  where allowed by the 1914 Act of Abandonment- some large sections are marked 'vested' where the canal was given back to the adjacent landowners according to the terms of the Act.

The original printing shows the landowners at the time the canal was built.
