Welcome to the September 2022 edition of On The Button
Message from the Board of Trustees on the CEO Position Members will be aware that our recently appointed CEO, Mr Simon Caraffi, has stepped down for a number of reasons that have been aired amongst the Board of Trustees and the Executive, including at a joint meeting. The resignation was accepted with regret. However, the messaging of his arrival was already committed to print in the Dragonfly magazine and AGM papers you have recently received. To be clear, Simon Caraffi’s departure as CEO has taken place, but we were unable to correct the published documents without additional cost or risking compromise of the constitutional timetable for distributing AGM material. We hope that this message will provide clarity. Without the immediate prospect of a suitable volunteer CEO being found, the Board remains of the view that affording a paid CEO is necessary and recruiting has been restarted to this end. In the meantime, the Board and Executive have agreed an interim management solution that will see our governance and operations continue much as hitherto in the short term, and our ability to address new opportunities and challenges strengthened. Simon Caraffi has provided an excellent consultancy paper reflecting his perspective on the issues and evolution of the WBCT, which the Board and Executive are considering and will discuss with a new CEO. The Board will update the membership again at the AGM on October 22nd; do come along. Waterways for Today In a bid to highlight the importance of the waterways network, the Inland Waterways Assocation (IWA) has produced a new report: Waterways for Today. The report demonstrates how inland waterways can contribute to the country’s economic recovery and outlines the 12 most significant benefits that the inland waterways can bring to our economy, environment, local communities and lives. Click below to access the report from the IWA website East Wichel leak Those living in East Wichel are all too aware that the canal there, constructed over 10 years ago, has been leaking. Work is continuing to solve the problems. New manager for the Visitor Centre We are pleased to announce that the Trust Visitor Centre in Swindon now has a new Manager, Julie Johnson-Little.
