Latton Bugle – September 2024
In September’s Bugle, Doug Small gave a summary of what’s been filling up the Latton Basin diary.
Fallen Tree
Clive and his team from the Waterways Recovery Group (WRG) visited to remove a tree that had fallen across the aqueduct.
Melksham Food & River Festival
Latton Basin were out in force at the Melksham Food & River Festival at the end of August. With WBCT as next door neighbours, Doug and co met old friends and made new ones.
Newbury Agricultural Show
The group also pitched their stand at the Newbury Agricultural Show in September. Unfortunately, the show fell on a disastrously wet weekend and turnout was much lower than expected.
Lock
The team have been carrying on building the lock’s wing walls.
Wednesday Work Parties
Volunteers are most welcome to join Vince Osgood and his team at their regular Wednesday work parties. Contact vince.osgood@lattonbasin.info for details.
Cotswold Canal Trust
The Latton Basin’s neighbours, the Cotswold Canal Trust, have held a Waterways Recovery Group weekend camp. Volunteers built a new aqueduct over the stream that runs under the canal alongside Weymoor Bridge at the village of Latton.
Fresh Air & Fun
The Latton Basin group is an effective band of volunteers dedicated to preserving a small piece of canal history, while also improving the towpath and canal bed for all to enjoy. Aqueduct repairs are a priority, but they also need a team to manage hedgerows on either side of the canal. It’s a very worthwhile project to get involved in. Please contact Doug if you are interested at doug.small@lattonbasin.info
Lease Fund Appeal
The group’s lease fund appeal is still running. If anyone would like to contribute, they’d be most grateful. Donations can be made to Latton Basin Restoration, 03856745, 30-95-36, or send a cheque payable to Latton Basin Restoration to 8 Raymond Road, Maidenhead, Berks SL6 6DF.
Funding
The group are always on the look-out for more funding opportunities. As the project progresses, so will spending. If you know of any potential sources, please contact Doug.
