West Vale - Visit Shrivenham Canal Park
Have you walked off your Christmas lunch yet? A visit to the Canal Park at Shrivenham could be just what you’re looking for.
Shrivenham is a historic village in the Vale of White Horse that’s only six miles east of Swindon and close to the county boundary with Wiltshire.
WBCT volunteers have worked tirelessly for decades to create the beautiful Canal Park, a tranquil haven by the canal bed on the edge of the village for local people. There's an abundance of wildlife, trees, brooks and plants.
If you’ve not been to the Canal Park before, it’s well worth a visit. An on-site car park gives easy access to the Park and helpfully provides an information board for visitors.
A wander round the woods, streams, ponds and canal bed offers a peaceful, restorative escape. Look out for wildlife or spot an unusual tree – there’s plenty of information as you go round to help you make the most of your walk, plus lots of benches to stop and take in the surroundings or have a rest. The distant sound of trains on the Great Western main line only add to the special atmosphere.
While you’re there, see if you can find Shrivenham Arch Bridge (SN6 8JL), Tuckmill Brook, and Steppingstone Lane Bridge (SN6 8HZ). Shrivenham itself has thatched cottages, stone walls, a historic pump and a 17th century church.
If you’re after refreshments, on Shrivenham’s High Street you’ll find the Prince of Wales pub, Bloomfield’s deli, Gulshan Indian restaurant, a Co-op supermarket and the Hub shop offering pre-loved goods and a refillery.
