Swindon Oasis Site Explained

The Swindon Oasis site has had much publicity lately. Even BBC Points West came out to capture our story.

So why is it so vital?

The original North Wilts Canal turned from what is now becoming the bus boulevard and went northwards passing under the Sheppard Street underpass (under the GWR rail network). It then proceeded and passed alongside the former Oasis leisure centre site. The Western Flyer cycle route currently sits on top of the canal line.

To re-instate a workable and restored canal that would bring ecological and economic benefits and be a useful and enjoyable asset to the community, we need a certain width. Unfortunately, site owner Seven Capital’s current plans submitted in December do not allow enough width. The boundary is up to the existing cycle path, which would rule out any existing plans to re-instate the canal.

We have formally submitted our objections to Seven Capital’s planning application. There are also many objections from local residents and the Save Oasis Campaign.
