The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is looking for Volunteer Engineers to support our ambitious restoration projects across Wiltshire, Swindon, and Oxfordshire.
About the role
As a Volunteer Engineer, you will play a key role in the planning, design, and implementation of canal restoration works. Working alongside our dedicated team of volunteers and professionals, you will help ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
Key responsibilities
- Assist with the design and technical planning of canal restoration projects
- Provide engineering input on structures such as locks, bridges, and culverts
- Support project management, including site assessments and risk analysis
- Work with volunteers and contractors to ensure best practices in construction and maintenance
- Help secure permissions and approvals from local authorities and environmental bodies
- Contribute to sustainability and environmental impact considerations
Who we’re looking for
We welcome volunteers with a background in civil engineering, structural engineering, or related disciplines. Ideal candidates will have:
- Experience or qualifications in engineering (professional or academic)
- Knowledge of waterways, heritage structures, or infrastructure projects (preferred)
- Problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- A passion for heritage restoration and environmental conservation
