West Vale - Talking of Trees
We have some interesting trees at Shriveham Canal Park and in the local area along the canal.
Some are impressive mighty old oaks but most are smaller and less conspicuous. There are examples of lots of our native trees. We also have several wild fruit trees - including cherries, apples and plums - plus some which are difficult to identify.
Is the impressively large crab apple a native or is it a poor specimen that’s grown from a seed from a discarded cultivated apple core? We would love to know – could you, or someone you know, tell us more about the crab apple tree? Please get in touch if you could help.
A couple of other specimens of particular note are a rare chequers tree - which may be the origin of the name of the Prime Minister’s residence - and an even rarer woolly bobbles tree. Please pay us a visit to see if you can spot them.
We are also available to provide conducted tours. Just email me! Alan Norris – alan.norris@wbct.org.uk
There's always much more news with many photos on our web pages. Please take a look.
Please help – do you have any old garden or workshop tools or equipment that you could donate to us? We need lots for all our visitors. It’s also easy to become a supporter. Just visit our website – www.wbct.org.uk and click ‘Get involved’- please join us.
Like to join in actively? We hold work parties every Wednesday and Saturday. Our local work party organiser - kenn.tagg@wbct.org.uk - would be delighted to hear from you! Its good fun and very rewarding.
